Neighbourhood Environment Watch Foundation (NEW)

Neighborhood Environment Watch Foundation (NEW) was established in 2005 to address issues of environmental pollution. Its thematic focus is on environment (Climate change, land degradation), health (water and sanitation). It has a 7 member Board of Directors with the Executive Director being in charge of the daily administration of the organization. He is supported by three other staff and two ad-hoc staff. NEW have 56 volunteer members who help in the achievement of the aims and objective of the organization. NEW is a member of Clean Up The World, Australia; 350 org and is the South East Coordinator of the Green Alliance Nigeria and a member of the Climate Change Network. NEW is currently implementing a GEF/SGP programme on climate change.

Purpose of Organization:

NEW Foundation works to inspire positive change, promote social responsibility, environmental sustainability, equal access to resources, food security, access to water, sanitation and hygiene promotion and spirit of volunteerism in our society.

GEF/SGP involvement:

NEW is currently implementing a GEF/SGP project of reforesting 80 ha of degraded land in Enyigba and Edda communities in Abakaliki LGA of Ebonyi state. The project started this year (2011) and is to end in 2012.


NEW has over 5 years experience in addressing issues of climate change and land degradation in the communities she is working with. In 2010 NEW planted over 5000 trees in Nwofe in Ebonyi state to address climate change mitigation and adaptation. It has through its television programme created awareness and promoted healthy environmental consciousness in Nigeria. NEW is en environmental stakeholder in Nigeria and has participated in programmes of NESREA and the Federal Ministry of Environment to develop environmental policies in Nigeria. It has Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria as one its partners. NEW has also promoted such international UN activities such as the World Environment Day; World Water Day, and Internal Year of Sanitation among many others.
