The Institute for China and Global Environmental Sustainability (CHANGES)

The Institute for China and Global Environmental Sustainability (CHANGES) established in 2006 is a non-government environmental think tank in Beijing, China. Its goal is to develop innovative environmental sustainability strategies for China to protect environment, to bridge and promote exchange and cooperative actions between international and Chinese organizations in the field of environmental sustainability and societal wellbeing. It is partnered with Chinese Academy of Sciences; Tsinghua University; Peking University; Nanjing University; Fudan University; East China Normal University; Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (the Center for Ecological Economy and Sustainable Development); International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED-UK); and International Institute for Sustainability.

The mission of the institute is to enhance global sustainability by supporting environmental decision making to improve China’s environmental quality and adaptive capacity

Researchers and associates of CHANGES have led and completed many relevant research projects including design and implement of two projects funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) on carbon sequestration and climate adaptation in China; carry out a joint project that is still underway to apply an integrated research approach to assess drought risk for agriculture and water availability under climate variations and change in northwest China; conduct projects on land policy evaluation, farm household surveys, policy meetings, training courses for Chinese resource managers and policy makers all over China; research the links between population policy and regional sustainable development; and conduct research on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China including POPs usage/emission data collection, POPs concentration monitoring, and toxic substances exposure risk assessment.

In recent years, We finished more than 80 researcher projects, including projects funded by UNDP and Heinrich Boell Foundation. We published more than 300 paper and books, including papers about water crisis and management of China in Nature and Science and a Atlas of Population and Environmental Change of People's Republic of China.
