Greenriver Environmental Protection Association of Sichuan

The main objectives of Greenriver are: to operate environmental protection stations in the source and upper parts of the Yangtze River, to organize scientists and invite environmental protection groups to conduct environmental-related research in the above areas; to offer workable solutions and implementation plans; to promote collective involvement in ecological protection and to promote cultural exchanges between environmental organizations at home and abroad.

Date of Establishment:

26-Feb, 1999

Purpose of Organization:

The goals of Greenriver are: to promote the environmental protection of the headwaters of rivers, to foster public environmental awareness and the conservation ethic, to encourage citizen participation, and to ensure environmentally sustainable economic and social development of the headwaters area.

GEF/SGP involvement:

Project name: Project on Reduction of POPs at the source of Yangtze River and Development of Alternative Livelihood to Achieve Sustainable Grassland Management

1. Biodiversity conservation
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the third pole of the world, is a place of fragile ecological environment with an average altitude of 5,000 meters. There are living the most adaptive and strongest wild life. In 90s, the Tibetan antelope was crazy hunted by poachers in Hoh Xil for its precious fur, and other wild animals such as wolf, yak, brawn bear and snow leopard was also hunted by the same time. The ecological balance was broken in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Tibetan antelope were almost extincted and the population of other wild animals decreased sharply. The animal heaven changed into silent hell.
In 1997, Greenriver established the first NGO’s conservation station in China---Suonandajie Natural Conservation Station in Hoh Xil. Since the station was established, it became the front line of anti-poaching and it was indeed effectively protect Tibetan antelope and other high land wild animals. The conservation station gave a push to the establishment of Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve.
In 2000, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which designed as the highest environmental friendly railway, started to construct. The railway would across the migration area of Tibetan antelope, so the government called for solutions to protect wild animals. In 2002, Geenriver submitted the reports, which costed volunteers 2 years to finish---- “The Report on Wildlife from Wudaoliang to Kumlum Mountains” and “The Recommendations for the Selection of Construction Sites and Sectional Construction for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway” to the State Environmental Protection Agency, the State Forestry Bureau, and Commission of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Construction and other relevant departments. Most of the advises and suggestions were taken.
In 2004, Greenriver recruited volunteers to set up traffic light on Qinghai-Tibet highway in order to ensure Tibetan antelopes cross the highway and get into their breeding ground.More than 2000 antelopes were convoyed pass through the highway in that year. This project promoted the protection to Tibetan antelope and other wild animals in plateau. According to the observation, the population quantity of Tibetan antelope and other wild animals has been increased in recent years, even the wolf has come back who once been thought to be disappeared .
In 2010, Greenriver carried out a comprehensive project "Glacier Rescuing Movement", and implemented biodiversity investigation around Que’er Mountain Glacier located in Sichuan Province of China. The experts and scientists recorded and analysed the biodiversity distribution and environmental change trend of the Que’er Glacier based on glacier investigation, botanic investigation and bird investigation, and finished “The Botanic Investigation Report of Xinluhai in Que’er Mountain”.
2. Climate change
The number of glaciers supporting the Yangtze River is the biggest in the world. Along with the global warming, the melting of glacier will inevitable change the ecological environment of Yangtze River. Started in 2005, Greenriver has worked with the glaciologist (from the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences) and anthropologist (from Sichuan University) to conduct the glacier recession monitoring and anthropology research in the source area of Yangtze River. During the 5 continuing years of investigation, a lot of first hand data, pictures, satellite data and videos has been acquired, which will be advantageous to the study of climate change.
According the research, the largest glacier of Yangtze River Source has retreated over 4,000 meters in 40 years. It is the first time to get the glacier retreating distance by comprehensive measurement and gives the strong evidence that the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is severely impacted by the global warming. This research provides the baseline for scientists to study the glaciers located in the source area of Yangtze River, as well as the reference for government to make policies for addressing climate change.
In the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, 2010, Greenriver took the opportunity to display the threaten caused by the climate change and glacier retreating, and the impacts to the local resident who living in the source area of Yangtze River. The display called attention of the international society and NGOs.
In the Cancun climate change conference 2010, climate adaptation was specific clarified as the equally important position as climate mitigation. Therefore, Greenriver started the construction of the second NGO’s conservation station----The Yangtze River Headwaters Ecological Conservation Station in the Yangtze River headwaters in 2011. The objectives are to help the local herdmen to adapt to the negative effects brought by climate change, establish an environmental friendly community, collect and sort the waste, develop alternative livelihood, sustainable manage grassland and minimize the damages caused by the climate change.
At present, the construction of the conservation station has entered the final stage and it will put into operation in September 2012.
