Sudanese Environment Conservation Society (SECS)

The Sudanese Environment Conservation Society (SECS) is a Sudanese National NGO officially registered in 1975, concerned with environmental conservation and achievement of sustainable development through popular participation. SECS had been a pioneer society addressing environmental issues with a lot of accumulated experience and ackowledged credibility for its genuine and dedicated efforts.

Purpose of Organization:

SECS main purpose is working for peace, environmental rehabilitation and sustainable development, poverty eradication through people participation and achieving the MDGs especially during the post-conflict period.

GEF/SGP involvement:

NO, SECS have not been involved in implementation of a GEF/SGP Project.


Biodiversity: SECS has worked in Biodiversity field for 37 years providing lectures, campaigns and capacity building programs as well publications written by SECS experts in this field.
Climate change: SECS is implementing two projects regarding climate change ie. CLACC which is an international project funded by IIED, covering many countries including Sudan. And Community Based Adaptation Project (CBA).
Land degradation: land degradation and desertification have been of the major concerns of SECS since its establishment; the society has been working in this field by providing plantation campaigns, awareness raising campaigns, brochures and publications. SECS has been engaged with different national and international associated working in fighting desertification and land degradation.
Organic pollution and Ozone layer depletion: organic pollution and gas emissions are highlighted by SECS activities in forms of brochures and publications, lectures, campaigns as well as formulation of pressures groups working with related authorities.
The experiences regarding these activities are (30) years for organic pollution and (18) for Ozone layer depletion. SECS is conducting studies and research with the industrial sector, specially Sugar Companies.
Other areas:
Environmental rehabilitation and protection and Environmental awareness raising: SECS has the national lead role in rehabilitation and protection of environment since 1975 through public awareness campaigns, public lectures, training workshops and health and plantation campaigns.
Lobbying and advocacy: SECS continuously Lobbying and Advocate for Environmental policies and enforcing environmental laws through its LAP program since its establishment as well as participating in formulation for the national environmental legislation.
Poverty alleviation: It’s a commitment of SECS to fight poverty as a means of protecting the environment, especially by providing alternative sources of Energy and Revolving Funds projects.
Water sanitation and hygiene: SECS has been working in this field for more than 10 years (especially in Southe Kordofan State with Concern Worldwide) with the pastoralists and hosting local communities by providing potable drinking water, rehabilitation of water yards and School and Public latrines by separation of animal and human outlets, health campaigns and workshops and digging wells.
Peace building:
As many parts of Sudan have been affected by war and internally displaced people, SECS recently has been engaged in many efforts and alliances for conflict resolution and peace building both on the regional level (RBC projects) and national level with its partners (Water for peace project in South Kordofan State with Concern worldwide) - (Eco peace and natural resource management project in North Kordofan State with EC- Sudan) and (Eco peace project in Gedarif State with Oxfam, Novib).

All of the above mention focal areas of the GEF are being part of any project or community intervention implemented by SECS – as applicable – as a means to approach it strategies and fulfill its commitments towards Sudan’s Environment and communities.
SECS also has been appointed as a member of the Institution formulation committee.
