Sustainable Development and Environmental Law Institute

Sustainable Development and Environmental law Institute was initiated by Ocean University of China, approved by Shandong Environmental Protection Bureau of Shandong Province and registered in Shandong Department of Civil Affairs. It is a non-profit organization participated by environmental advocates.

The purpose of the organization is academic research of Environmental Law, law & regulation promotion and social service. There are Environmental Law & Policy Research office, Environmental Law Methodology Research Office, Coastal Zone Management and Marine Environment Research Office, etc. Through academic exchange abroad and at home, project research as well as publishing papers and books, we aim to promote further development of Environmental & Natural Resources Law and make contribution

GEF/SGP involvement:

Yes. Our organization has participated in the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem Project.
Our organization has been fully involved in the UNDP/GEF Reducing Environmental Stress in the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem Project (YSLME Project) from 2005 and conducted two studies, including Governance Analysis of the YSLME: China’s Case and Political (2006 March to June) and Social Acceptance Analysis of the YSLME SAP (2008 October to December).


We have made great contributions to Chinese Environmental Law legislation and the development of related policy and also a lot of achievements have been made:
1.       Prompting the protection of marine environment. We fully participated the research and argumentation of the legislation of Bohai Sea Special Law and drafted the scholar proposal manuscript, which motivates the development of regional marine legislation in China. We also participated the in the UNDP/GEF YSLME Project, which makes contributions to the formation of the framework of regional marine law.
2.       Prompting the research and practice of environment public interest litigation. We have undertaken the research project of All-China Environment Federation, which explores how to construct environment public interest litigation system in China and we have completed a book of 200,000 words. Despite, we have also held the First National Environment Law Moot Court Competition which helps to popularize the knowledge about environment public interest litigation among students. Moreover, environment public interest litigation practitioner seminar was held and we invited judges, procurator, and scholars to explore the problems confronted in the environment public interest litigation practice.
3.       Enhancing public education and popularizing environmental law knowledge. We hold Meeting of Environmental and Natural Resources Law Association of Shandong Law Society every year which invites law scholars, law practitioners, enterprise representatives, citizens and administrators of Shandong province to explore environmental problems and find legal countermeasures. Besides, two projects of WWF China was taken by us, one is enhancing the environment protection of Yellow Sea coastline, the other is promoting the protection of Yellow River estuary wetland. Through the two projects, we have helped to arouse the environment protection awareness and popularize the legal knowledge among young people.
4.       Establishing internship program with the grassroots environment organizations. We select student of environment law to work as interns in some NGOs and help them to popularize knowledge of environmental law and use legal weapon to deal with environment problems.
