Borneo Ecotourism, Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Society

In 1999, Sukau Ecotourism Research & Development Centre or SERDC was set up under the umbrella of Borneo Eco Tours and Sukau Rainforest Lodge to conduct research and development in the field of ecotourism. It has been conducting various environmental conservation projects by then, with the help of several private organizations. With the increasing knowledge and scope of work of SERDC, it was decided to rename SERDC as Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies or BEST in 2006. In April 2007, BEST was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies Sabah as a non-profit organization in order to enable it to tap into external funds. Since then, the scale of the projects and amount of funding from external sources have steadily increased. In 2014 BEST Society was selected as the winner of UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation in Non-Governmental Organizations category in Madrid, Spain.

Date of Establishment:

01-Jan, 2007

Purpose of Organization:

BEST Society’s objectives is geared towards sustainability of people, profit and environment by applying community-based ecotourism in Sabah with emphasis on capacity building to generate community benefits. First, we identify and implement basic needs for health to improve human capital (production capacity) such as medical projects and provision of water tanks, then to improve knowledge capital (productivity) in order to raise income level through developing entrepreneurship projects from virgin coconut oil, organic farming, eco-camp by using whatever local resources the community may have and providing skills training including finance, worm farming, motivation, discipline, farming techniques and developing supply chains of local produce. To do this, BEST Society identifies and works with strategic partners to fund as well as to implement these projects.

GEF/SGP involvement:

Environmental Conservation and Community Capacity Building at Kampung Kimihang, Matunggong, Kudat, Sabah (2010-2012).

In 2000, we initiated a tree planting project called Kinabatangan Wildlife Corridor Rehabilitation Program or KWICORP. We collaborate with local communities in Sukau, Sukau Rainforest Lodge, WWF and Kinabatangan Coridor of Life Tourism Operators Association, Sabah (KiTA), adopted 65 acres of degraded riverine at Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia. Since its initiation, a total of RM51,845.79 was spent and over 5000 trees were planted at the site.
In 2009, we successfully secured a grant of USD50,000.00 from the GEF SGP to fund Kimihang projects. With this fund, BEST Society continued to help the Matunggong community where nine projects were outlined; Beach cleaning & environmental awareness education, tree planting, motivational & life skills seminars, setting up micro enterprises, herbal & medicinal garden, virgin coconut oil workshop, setting up a community based ecotour involving river and firefly cruise, setting code of practice and training of ecotourism guides, conservation & sustainable use of offshore coral reefs & mangrove forest fringing the Loro River. Overall, these projects benefitted 692 people in Matunggong area. Some of them become entrepreneurs in producing virgin coconut oil.
Our latest project is a community based project where we initiated organic farming in Kg Rampai Besar, Kudat. Ten farmers were selected to participat in this project. This project aimed to improve their income and at the same time protecting the land from pesticides and herbicides usage which degraded the surrounding land.
