Agency for Development of Women and Children (ADWAC)

ADWAC was set up in September 1996 by Gambians following the closure of Save the Children-USA, an international organization that operated in the NBD for 14 years. ADWAC is registered non-sectarian, non-partisan development organization that pursues a program of integrated rural development to bring about sustainable improvement in rural living conditions, with particular emphasis being placed upon the well being of women and children. ADWAC works in the Northern Regions of the River Gambia, Central River South and Lower River Region.

Purpose of Organization:

To contribute to the empowerment and sustainable improvement in the quality of life of the poor and vulnerable people especially, women and children to live a life of dignity free from poverty.

GEF/SGP involvement:

ADWAC has been involved in the implementation of GEF/SGP for about 2 years now. Firstly on a project called North Bank Green Initiative Project. The objective of the project were;
1)To contribute to the restoration of the lost forest cover in North Bank Region of the Gambia through youth involvement in restoration of at least 4 ha of forest cover by the end of 2015.
2)to build the capacity of 2 youth organizations for the sustainable management of the woodlots in 2 communities
3) to enhance livelihood and income generating activity for 2 youth groups in NBR.


Increased awareness on the level of forest degradation in NBR for 50 youths and local authorities.
•        Permanent nursery established at ADWAC which has the capacity to produce 30,000 seedlings per annum.
•        30 youths acquired skills in modern beekeeping skills.
•        2 youth groups equipped with beekeeping materials.
•        2 hectare of land transferred to 2 youth groups which are fully protected.
•        50 youths acquired skills in seedling production and commercialization.
•        The 21,580 seedlings will increase access to fuel wood, timber, seeds and fodder.
•        Increase and contribute to the micro climate.
•        The skills youth have acquired in nursery establishment and beekeeping contribute to employment and income levels of youths.
•        The central nursery established at ADWAC will enable easy access to seedlings and replicate the project in other locations.
