United Nauro-Gor Inc.

United Nauro-Gor has a long history of being a tribe in Papua New Guinea affected by tribal fighting over three decades. The initiative was taken by our local leaders, supported by Fr. Jan Jaworski, a Catholic Priest who was assigned pastoral duties at the local parish, to arrange and make peace amongst warring clans, introduce community projects ranging from coffee, vegetable farming, livestock husbandry and domestication, fisheries, rural housing, social services, capacity building trainings, roads and infrastructure, environment, etc., Reforestation /Afforestation and conserving our natural environments including protecting our biological diversity is an integral and strategic focus area we continue to highly promote and effectively engage our people in meaningful activities that benefits

Purpose of Organization:

United Nauro-Gor Inc. promotes peace, unity, human and community (sustainable) development through its established local governance system, community-based laws and community policing, which enable effective leadership and organization with increased networking, participation and partnerships with different stakeholders including partners. The community government essentially engages local people in community-based sustainable livelihood projects, adult literacy and education, socio-economic programs, food security, environmental and sustainable land management projects with specific focus on reforestation/afforestation, watershed and biodiversity conservation.

United Nauro-Gor is an organized community (organization) that unifies warring clans and people of Nauro-Gor, apart from organizational management and governance, continue to educate people on essential life skills through training, mentoring, guidance and establishing community resource centers and effectively engaging them in relevant community projects ranging from agriculture, animal domestication, fisheries, rural housing scheme and social services to small-scale business activities. Administering these projects propels unity and peace; where people become preoccupied and actively engage in meaningful activities, subject to social enrichment, environmental safeguards and increasing prosperity. Reviving the natural environmental richness and biodiversity composition is one of our special projects.

GEF/SGP involvement:

•       We implemented a Small Grants Program Operational Performance Four (4) project funding, entitled “Nauro Reforestation – Educating to Conserve project” from 2011 – 2013. Total project ceiling US $50, 000.00
•       Concept paper approved and funding agreement is now underway with PNG SGP under OP 5 funding phase to access and implement a project entitled “Improving watershed management through nature conservation & reforestation / afforestation initiatives”. Planning grant accessed and consultations just concluded, full proposal will be submitted for screening and subsequent funding for implementation.   


•       We are currently a Board Member of the Provincial Forestry Board in the Simbu Province Forestry Board. We extensively consulted, reviewed and deliberated with other members and stakeholders to develop the “Provincial Forestry Plan 2015 – 2019.”
•       United Nauro-Gor, represented by Executive Director and Program Manager, were part of the National Consultative Committee to develop the recently enacted and approved overarching policy document namely: PAPUA NEW GUINEA POLICY ON PROTECTED AREAS (copy can be accessed in www.cepa.gov.pg). To be implemented by the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA), the National Department responsible for conservation and environmental protection in Papua New Guinea with other national departments, statutory bodies, CSOs, land and resource owners and active involvement and participation of other relevant stakeholders.
•       We also developed our local Reforestation and Community Conservation Areas Plan to be implemented in our tribe, the surrounding clans (wards), our District and other Districts in the Province.


•       Represented CSOs in Papua New Guinea and attended the Global Environment Facility Expanded Constituency Workshop & Civil Society Organization Meetings for the Pacific Region in the Cook Islands from the 6th – 8th October 2015. Presented a paper on “Way Forward – Enhancing CSO participation in the Pacific Region”.
•       Represented CSOs in Papua New Guinea and attended Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Partnership Forum, Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement meetings, Montego Bay (Jamaica), 21st – 24th June 2014
•       Represented CSOs in Papua New Guinea and attended the Global Environment Facility Expanded Constituency Workshop & Civil Society Organization Meeting, Apia-Samoa, October 13th – 17th 2013
•       Continue to contribute through surveys and questionnaires facilitated by the International Evaluation Office (IEO) and the Regional Focal Point (RFP).
