Early 1995, the NGO Nature Tropical initially worked focused on the creation of a museum for natural history. This museum has become a unique place for adults and especially young people to learn about nature in Benin. Nature Tropical soon broadened its work to practical conservation work in the field in combination with general environmental awareness raising, training activities and lobby. Main focus is to protect endangered species in marine and coastal habitats. its has been highly successful in addressing on local level as well on national and sub-regional the fate of several species of sea-turtle. His work encompassed participatory research, the set up of pilot protection activities with local communities, capacity building on various levels, and lobby and networking. The members on Nature Tropical NGO have been a key persons in the scientific acknowledgement of the existence of the humpback whale and various dolphin species is the coastal waters of Benin. This discovery was front page news for press, television and radio. Presently whaling tours are organized by Nature Tropical NGO.
Nature Tropical NGO organized national fairs on biodiversity which attracted thousands of peoples and produces audiovisuals that are broadcasted on the national television. It is a respected member of national, regional and international networks, like IUCN, African Biodiversity Network, Gold Coast Sea Turtle Conservation Network and Green Actors for West Africa (GAWA) etc. Nature Tropical was the first Beninese NGO to become member of the IUCN four years ago.

Above mentioned achievements should be seen in the context of not only an extremely poor country but also - until the end of eighties – a politically very isolated one. Also the fact that Benin makes part of the ‘Francophone’ world in which culturally ‘nature conservation’ has never been that popular compared to the Anglophone world makes the work, enthusiasm and results of Dossou-Bodjrenou so special.
