African Research Association managing Development in Nigeria (ARADIN)

ARADIN started as a research project conducting ethno-botanical and socio-economic research, community profiling using participatory research methods as well as development of social development and influx management plans in forest communities. Researches carried out by ARADIN highlighted the dependency of local communities on forest resources and identified women as primary users of non timber forest products (NTFPs) and thus the most vulnerable forest user group. The linkages between poverty and deforestation were also identified through household cash income surveys. ARADIN then developed a strategy of tackling these issues through community forestry programme, provision of sustainable livelihoods, climate change adaptation, policy influence and Adult literacy programmes

Date of Establishment:

Purpose of Organization:

ARADIN is an NGO established with the aim of working in partnership with local communities and other relevant stakeholders to promote natural resources management and sustainable livelihoods

GEF/SGP involvement:

Our experience in climate change adaptation has recorded the following achievements;
i) Introduced fuel efficient energy stoves to 118 households to reduce the pressure on the forest by forest dwellers for fuelwood demand for domestic use
ii) Raised 3,000 indigenous tree nurseries and planted on degraded sites covering about 2 hectares
iii) Climate change awareness in target communities raised by 25%
iv) Established two small scale garri processing factory for community groups to encourage the cultivation of cassava which is suitably grown on degraded sites so that further clearing into the forest for the establishment of farms is reduced
vi) Developed Natural resource management plans to encourage proper use of land and other resources at the community level
Biodiversity: Our work experience in the biodiversity focal area has resulted in the following achievements;
i) Organised and trained a community conservancy Initiative (Mbe Mountains Management Committee)
ii) Core conservation area clearly demarcated for the conservancy
