Years of Implementation: Fifteen (15) Months

Human Care and Maintenance Foundation has worked with UNDP/GEF/SGP for the past two years. Within the period capacity building workshops were organized for farmers and community members on how to adapt to the current changes in the climate. Moreover, a demonstration farm was done with the farmers on how to use the new technology in farming and these methods were treated with the farmers. Based upon the achievements of the project the organization has been asked to scale up the project to cover the entire vegetable farmers in the Tano South District by UNDP/GEF/SGP. On the second phase of the project community members are going to be trained intensively to use the new technology in farming. Moreover, they are going to be encouraged to plant and protect economic trees in their farms. Capacity building workshops on the causes and effects of bush fires will also be organized for the community members.
Beside the funds from UNDP/GEF/SGP, the organization on its own has conducted projects on climate change within the District. Most of the populations are farmers and they do slash and burn which affects the soil organisms. The women also use the economic trees to produce charcoal for sell and for fire themselves. Community awareness was organized to educate the people on the need to plant fast growing trees for the charcoal and also use other alternative sources of fire for cooking. Most farmers cultivate vegetables in the district and because they need a lot of water for the watering, they weed close to rivers. What we saw was that they spray chemicals close to the rivers and this process kills the fish species in the river. Also because they weed close to the rivers the sunshine gets to the rivers direct and this makes most of the rivers dry-up during dry seasons. When these were identified by HUCAM, the organization with the chiefs and the assembly made some bye-laws and also enforces the existing laws on weeding close to the river for the farmers.
