  MEMBER PROFILE

Comuna Kichwa Santa Elena

This is a Kichwa indigenous organization located in the ecuadorian amazon region. Our land is about 3.300 hectares and the 96% is a primary forest which is used in a traditional way. For about 20 years the oil industry is located around our area and we had to face them because of noise and other effects in the community members. Currently we are part of a program called Socio Bosque which gives us economic incentives for conservation. We have accepted this program because is connected to our traditional activities using and managing the resources and biodiversity.
We have a steering council that leads the organization and also 3 times in a year a general assembly to make major decisions. Climate change is one of the topics affecting the traditional knowledge of the community and it is one of our priorities for the next years.
