Alliance for Nutrition and Reconstruction (ANR)

Alliance for Nutrition and Reconstruction (ANR) is operating in the Southern Province of Zambia, specifically Choma district with a goal to contribute towards rural livelihood improvement through environment protection with a mission to foster a process of ongoing change in favour of the marginalised rural communities by promoting strategies that exploit the full potential of women, men and youths to transform into an enlightened society able to take care and control of their resources, needs and problems for improved welfare. With the support of GEF/SGP, ANR is implementing a beekeeping project with the aim to diversify the rural economy to create additional sources of income to households which come through honey sales and honey by-products thereby guaranteeing food security at household level. Additionally, the project is being implemented as a basis for biodiversity conservation to contribute to eco-system improvement.

Date of Establishment:

06-Aug, 2004

Purpose of Organization:

To contribute towards rural livelihood improvement through environmental care and protection including natural resources use

GEF/SGP involvement:

The Namuswa bee products production, processing and marketing as a basis for biodiversity conservation - 4 years

Experience:

Through the support of GEF/SGP, ANR has implemented beekeeping project as a way to conserve the forests and biodiversity and raise incomes for rural families through the sale of honey and its by-products resulting in an improvement in the economic wellbeing of participating rural families. The income earned from beekeeping has become the motivating factor to maintain the remaining forests and for the protection of biodiversity resulting in a reduction in charcoal burning and indiscriminate felling of trees. The communities have sensitised by ANR to engage district level policy implementers (Forest ) to influence the development of by-laws which contribute to the protection of local and protected forests from wanton destruction. This has resulted into the formation community guards maintained through local resources in the implementation of by-laws formulated at community level. Community meetings are regularly held with oversight from the Forest department in the district to address issues of charcoal production and alternative livelihoods. The target communities have become aware of the national environmental policy which stipulates how they participate in the management of the natural resources that are around them.
