Rainforest Foundation US

For over 20 years the Rainforest Foundation has worked to protect both the rich biological diversity of the rainforest and the cultural integrity of the peoples whose lives and livelihoods are inextricably linked to these forests.

The Rainforest Foundation provides direct financial support and hands-on technical training to indigenous communities and local grassroots organizations to:

    Gain official control of their land and resources.
    Participate in the legal and policy decisions that affect their rights and resources.
    Build strong and effective local leaders and organizations.

Purpose of Organization:

The mission of the Rainforest Foundation is to support indigenous and traditional peoples of the rainforest in their efforts to protect their environment and fulfill their rights.   It achieves this goal by creating and supporting projects in collaboration with grassroots partner organizations. Our work has focused on land and resource rights, with an emphasis on legal and capacity strengthening initiatives.

Experience:

For the past 20+ years, we have supported land titling efforts of indigenous peoples in the Amazon and Central America. Among the notable achievements we have been involved with are the following:
1991: Helped establish the Menkragnoti Reserve, Brazil
2001: Ratification of the 1.1 million acre Panará Area, Brazil
2005: Establishment of the over 4 million acre Raposa Serra do Sol indigenous territory, Brazil
2007: Titling of Shuar lands, Transkutuku, Ecuador
2007 – 2010: Titling of Santa Cruz & Conejo, Maya lands, Belize
2008: Titling of the Mayangna community of Awas Tingni, Nicaragua
2012: Titling of Caña Blanca and Puerto Lara, Wounaan Collective Lands, Darién, Panama

Thereby helping protect some 75,000 sq kilometers.
