Grameena Vikas Samithi

Grameena Vikas Samithi (GVS), Tirupati is organised by group of socially conscious and educated persons with the influence of Mr. Baba Saheb Amte, a renowned Social Worker of our country. The team, who are concerned about poverty, illiteracy, hunger and squalor which compelled areas to some sort of sole-human existence. The organisers of GVS felt that, being relatively better off, they ought to do whatever they could improve the lot of the people in the lowest strata of the society.
The Founder Volunteer and President is Mr. L .Surya Narayana Reddy, who hails from rural farming family and a graduate in farm sciences. Our focusing fields are 1.Agriculture and Allied Activities, and 2. Environment and Nature Conservation.

Purpose of Organization:

To achieve socio-economic improvement of rural folk (agriculture community) by introducing technological interventions without hampering the traditional way of life and eco-system

Experience:

Being a grassroot level organisation, we are adopting ‘think globally and act locally ‘policy in respect of implementation of agriculture and allied activities programmes, and conservation of environment and nature for posterity.
We have aorganized workshops/seminars/demonstrations on the following, in agriculturally potential villages:
-Effect of Chemical Pesticides on Bio-diversity-1993
-Animal Welfare and Waste Management-1994
-Eco-development Camp for Women and method demonstration of vermicompost-1995, and
-Demonstration of NADEP Compost method in 1998.

We have conducted awareness camps for farmers and agricultural workforce to halt the trend of pollution out of primary occupation of the world by organising resource poor farmers as Self-Help Groups for implementation of Low External Inputs and Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA)/Farming for the Future technologies with guidance and support of Agriculture Man Ecology (AME), a bilateral project of The Netherlands Government and Government of India, and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO- New Delhi also supported) with 100 families in 10 villages of two Mandals during 1999-2008.

Achievements:
-Introduced bio-fungicides/ pesticides/fertilizers in field and horticultural crops, and use of vermi and NADEP compost.
-One row of pigeon pea (redgram) per seven rows of groundnut i.e., 7:1ratio improves income considerably.
-Cowpea one row with pigeon pea controlled leaf miner
-Castor inter cropping intensity is being tested, helped in control of White grub, Red hairy caterpillar (RHC) and Spodoptera.
-Minimised use of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in groundnut, red gram, tomato, paddy and mango by the farmers of our area of operation. Eg. Six (not 12 or 25) ml of chlorpyriphos/kg groundnut seed is an effective method of managing white/root grubs.
- Imparted trainings to farmer volunteers on sustainable agriculture practices, and organised exposure visits to organic farmers’fields in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states.
-Formation of mutually aided co-operative society (MACS) to maintain continuity in use of LEISA    practices, in November 2008 and obtained legal status for the same in the year 2013.
