CONSERVACIÓN DEL TERRITORIO INSULAR MEXICANO, A.C. (ISLA)

Conservación del Territorio Insular Mexicano, A.C. (ISLA) 1995-2015, is a group of active scientist and individuals in the Sea of Cortez, dedicated to research and conservation activities since the early 1980s. In 1985, many of the current members of ISLA initiated the research project “Conservation of the Islands, Gulf of California”, in affiliation with the Biology Institute of Mexico (UNAM). In 1992, members of ISLA´s team worked with the Ecology National Institute/SEDESOL, under the World Bank/GEF Program; where they developed an administrative structure for the Natural PA Sea of Cortez Islands Migratory Bird and Wildlife Refuge. One of the most successful activities of ISLA, is the Strategy for Conservation of Espíritu Santo Island as patrimony of Mexicans and their future generations.

Purpose of Organization:

The mission of Conservacion del Territorio Insular Mexicano, A.C. (ISLA) is the conservation of the land, coastal, marine and island ecosystems of Mexico.         

Experience:

ISLA has had participating in the elaboration of the management programs of: The Gulf of California Islands; Loreto Bay National Park; Espíritu Santo Island; San Jose Island and; San Lorenzo Archipelago, the last one includes Rasa Island. Additionally is coordinating the participatory planning of the Marine Ecological Ordinance of La Paz Bay and to elaborate the Coastal Loreto Land Tenure as a part of the Loreto Ecological Ordinance. In 2001 ISLA develop a Strategic Plan to build the Environmental Institution of Baja California Sur, with the support of SEMARNAT, Baja California Sur government, Homeland Foundation and WWF-Mexico/Gulf of California Program.
