Antigua and Barbuda Marine Ecosystems Protected Area Trust (MEPA)

The Marine Ecosystems Protected Area Trust Inc. (MEPA Trust), a Not for Profit Company, duly registered under the laws of Antigua & Barbuda on the 22nd May 2015 is interested in becoming a member of the GEF-CSO organization. MEPA Trust is an outcome of a GEF funded project “Sustainable Financing and Management of Eastern Caribbean Marine Ecosystems” which started in 2008. It is envisioned to be a core national mechanism for sustained financing to support local community environmental initiatives. Furthermore, it will award grants to support a wide range of both marine and terrestrial conservation-related activities. Supported programs will include marine protected area management, habitat and species management, local community engagement directly related to marine and or terrestrial protection, environmental education and awareness and implementation of laws and regulations for ecosystem and biodiversity conservation. The Board that is majority Non-Government Organizations (NGO) manages the Trust. Grants are awarded based on environmental priorities, the impact made to protected areas and ecosystems to support adaptation and increase resilience to climate change.

Purpose of Organization:

1. Generating regular, predictable funding streams for the long-term management and expansion of marine and coastal protected areas in the Caribbean region to support the protection and maintenance of biodiversity and natural resources;
2. Designing and implementing new revenue streams that will supplement existing conservation funding flows and matching funds for ongoing sources, including the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF); and
3. Demonstrating good management practices in protected areas in Antigua and in Barbuda through local knowledge and community-driven initiatives.
