Experience:

As a result of concerns regarding the capacity levels of communities surrounding Kafue national park particularly Kasonso Busanga Game Management Area(GMA) and Chibwika- Ntambu GMA of west Lunga national park. The Zambia Institute of Environmental Management (ZIEM) through environmental management programme, which aims to improve the long-term environmental sustainability of communities in Game management areas. This project is a practical intervention to operationalise a sustainable natural resources management and community livelihood approach that is appropriate to such communities. It also seeks to help local communities survive the difficult conditions created by the unsustainable natural resource harvest in the GMA.
With limited alternatives to survival in the project area, the economy and livelihoods of the majority of the population remain dependent on small-scale agriculture and hence upon the quality of the natural environment. Protecting the environment requires concerted effort from communities, which can only come about through partnership, information sharing, communication, capacity building, the dissemination of information and a joint responsibility for action. Through this project ZIEM is achieved the following: demonstrating conservation best practices and sustainable harvest of natural resources management in the area by addressing livelihood issues raised by affected communities, strengthening communities voice of conservation through coordination and training and representation in communities in different foras. Also linking communities to other platforms for opportunities
