AQUACULTURE ZIMBABWE

AQZ has succesfully piloted low cost biodiversity conserving Integrated Agriculture aquaculture projects in more tan 20 rural districts/communities for over eight years now. During the 2013 and 2014 projects, ponds measuring about 60000m2 of water surface área (60 production systems) were created in Bindura, Masvingo and Mwenezi districts alone directly benefiting 694 households. A total of 54 production systems are still functional while the other 6 were being affected by wáter challenges brought about by the El niño induced drought. A total of over 200 metric tonnes of fish have been produced that were either consumed at household level or sold to créate income. Purpose of Organization:

1. To promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture livelihoods interventions with a special focus on preserving the natural indeginous biodiversity of all aquatic species
2. To employ the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries and Aquaculture in supporting community based aquatic livelihoods
3. To champion the Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture (IAA) system of farming across Zimbabwe   

GEF/SGP involvement:

AQZ has been involved with the GEF and SGP for over 5 years now and have proudly hosted international delegates from GEF main offices to share experiences. The GEF Biodiversity project which AQZ implemented has hosted a UNDP delegation of farmers from Zambia for a farmer exchange visit on Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture practices with emphasis on biodiversity conservation and organic farming.

Experience:

AQZ spearheaded the formation of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Working Group (FAWG) Platform which is an all stakeholder forum to push for policy shifts towards sustainable conservation and utilisation of natural aquatic resources. This involves working with various CSOs that implement GEF funded projects on Biodiversity, Climate Change and so on.
