Life Empowerment Foundation

Life Empowerment Foundation (LEF) was founded in 1999 in Calabar by a team of development professionals made up of engineers, educationists, agriculturists, development and management consultants under the initiatives of United Nations Development programme (UNDP). LEF is a Non- Governmental and not for profit organisation with registration number CAC/IT/No 19166, registered in 2005 with the Cooperate Affairs Commission Abuja-Nigeria. The organisation office is located at 60/65 Ndidem Usang Iso Road, Calabar Cross River State, Nigeria.

Purpose of Organization:

To promote sustainable and efficient management techniques and system of natural resources including water, land and forest.

LEF interventions are in three focal areas which include: Enterprise Development, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Forest Protection.

GEF/SGP involvement:

Life Empowerment Foundation has implemented some environmental projects in Cross River State in GEF focal areas.   
      
In 2006-2007, LEF implemented Alternative Livelihoods Enterprise Projects for forest communities in Cross River State. The Alternative Livelihood Enterprise Projects for forest communities in Baunchor-Boki Local Government Area with financial support from United Nations Development Programme was under the 6th Country programme in Cross River State-Nigeria. The activities involved supplied, equipped and trained Baunchor eco-tourism community members in Boki LGA-Cross River State on alternative livelihood e.g. hair dressing, barding, tailoring and soap/cream making. LEF also trained Buanchor eco-tourism community members on propagation of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as mushroom and Gnetum africanum propagation.

LEF in one of her projects implemented Integrated Grass Cutter & Rabbit Development Projects for poverty reduction and sustainable livelihoods in Iwuru community-Baise Local Government Area Cross River State in 2008 with support from UNDP. The project involved training and establishment of grass cutters and rabbits farming in Iwuru community to reduce poverty. Between 2009 to date LEF has partner with the Cross River State Government in tree planting exercise in communities within the mangrove forest and the tropical rainforest of Cross River State of Nigeria.
