Lanzhou University Center for Western Environmental and Social Development & Gansu Center for Western Environmental and Social Development

Lanzhou University Center for Western Environmental and Social Development (Lucwesd) was registered at Lanzhou University, and its sister organization Gansu Center for Western Environmental and Social Development (Gawesd) was registered at Gansu Civil Affairs Administration, China. Both organizations are non-governmental organizations that focused on integrated rural community-based development, climate change addressing and relative field research and action. Since foundation of both organizations, they have successfully implemented over 50 diversified development programs including CBDRM(community-based disaster risk management), livelihood improvement, environmental rehabilitation, women’s health and environmental education, de-desertification and climate change addressing.

Purpose of Organization:

Promotion of the understanding of climate change impact and development amongst the public and rural communities, thus allowing action against climate changes?

GEF/SGP involvement:

The director of Lucwesd, Dr. Ding Wenguang was invited as a Public and Private Partnership (PPP) consultant by Gansu Provincial Forestry Bureau to attend a PRC-GEF Partnership on Land Degradation Prevention in Dry-land Ecosystem, China.
Contract period: May 1, 2011 to Jun. 30, 2012

Experience:

.Rural development in China should be based on participation of local communities. Empowerment to local communities is a key element of successful implementation and management of development programs.
2.Gender, indigenous and traditional culture should be carefully taken into account when designing a development program.
3.A successful development program should be based on integration of disaster management, livelihood improvement and environmental rehabilitation and local as well as national policies.
4.A successful development program should be replicable and sustainable.
5.Environmental policies should be based on public participation.
Our organization has been awarded following prizes:
1.A Community-based Climate Change Addressing Program in Northwest China won the first prize of Ford Motor Conservation and Environmental Protection in Dec. 2010.
2.Dr.Ding, Director of Lucwesd, was awarded “individual outstanding contribution prize” by the Vale and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, China in Beijing on 29th June 2011.
3.Dr. Ding’s book, A Research on Natural-social Environment and Poverty won the first prize offered by Gansu Provincial Government in Jan. 2011.
4.Dr. Ding’s research on environmental policy and poverty won the 2nd prize offered by Gansu Provincial Department of Environmental Protection in Jul. 2011.
Our organization’s rural poverty reduction model has been extended by the government.
Dr. Ding’s theory of Integration Model of Environmental Rehabilitation, Disaster Management and Livelihood Improvement has been passed scientific evaluation and been used by several development organizations.
