Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS)

Since its establishment 20 years ago in 1995, ARCOS is recognised for promoting information exchange, networking and capacity building and improving both livelihoods and the protection of critical species and ecosystems of the Albertine Rift region. In 2012, ARCOS received an international MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions as a recognition of promoting collaborative action in the Albertine Rift region. ARCOS is a Secretariat for the Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Forum and the Africa Regional Mountains Forum.

Purpose of Organization:

ARCOS’ Mission is “To enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in the Albertine Rift region through the promotion of collaborative conservation action for nature and people”.

The overall objectives of ARCOS as articulated in its constitution are the following:
•       To enhance the knowledge of biodiversity and natural resources in the Albertine Rift region;
•       To promote awareness raising and conservation action for better sustainable use of fragile natural resources of the Albertine Rift region;
•       To enhance the conservation and protection of key biodiversity features of the Albertine Rift region for the regional ecosystem integrity and future generations;
•       To promote capacity building, networking, regional collaboration and information exchange for better conservation action in the Albertine Rift region and other mountain ecosystems in Africa.

GEF/SGP involvement:

ARCOS was sub-contracted by WWF to facilitate the stakeholders strategic planning for the project "CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY IN THE ALBERTINE RIFT FORESTS OF UGANDA" implemented by the Government of Uganda and WWF in 2011.

Experience:

- ARCOS participates actively in national policy processes in countries of operation (Uganda, Rwanda Burundi, DRC)
- ARCOS hosts the African desk for the Mountain Partnership and promote mainstreaming of sustainable mountain development in national and international policy processes
- ARCOS works with different stakeholders in the integration of sustainable freshwater ecosystem in the Great Lakes region
- ARCOS is facilitating a regional network of NGOs to build their capacity to influence effective environmental impact assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment in the Albertine Rift region.
ARCOS participates actively in regional policy process (E.G.through the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment, AMCEN) and inter national (e.g. UNFCCC).
