KATAKWI CONSERVE UGANDA

Katakwi Conserve Uganda is a nine year local non-government organization registered with the NGO Board under the ministry of internal affairs (Reg N0.10316). The head office is located in Katakwi town council Katakwi district with the mission of strengthening capacities of the vulnerable communities through economic strengthening and promoting effective utilization of natural resources for sustainable development.
The vision :
An empowered, self sustaining community free of poverty that ensures sustainable utilization of natural resources.
Goal:
To promote biodiversity conservation through improving peoples livelihoods.

Purpose of Organization:

To promote biodiversity conservation through improving people’s livelihoods.

GEF/SGP involvement:

Integrated wetland management and conservation of rare and endangered flora and fauna around lake Opeta Bisina for sustainable development 2008-2010.

Community Conservation of Desert date and Shea butter trees in Katakwi district 2013-2015.

Experience:

From 2008-2010 Katakwi Conserve Uganda a local NGO designed and implemented Lake Opeta biodiversity Conservation and poverty reduction project funded by UNDP/GEF. This project was scaled up to a medium sized project extending wetland protected areas through community conservation initiated (COBWEB) Funded by UNDP/GEF. At community level Katakwi Conserve Uganda was instrumental in implementing and monitoring the establishment and strengthening community based systems and regulations that promote the sustainable use of wetlands with important biodiversity.

From 2013-2015 Katakwi Conserve Uganda designed and implemented community conservation of desert dates and Shea butter trees project in Katakwi District with funding from UNDP/GEF/SGP and based practices have been replicated and scaled up in the conservation of other useful indigenous spices.

Katakwi Conserve Uganda was very instrumental in engaging other CSOs like International Union for the conservation of nature (IUCN), Nature Uganda and Uganda wild life society leading to successful implementation of extending wetland protected areas through community conservation initiatives (COBWEB) a project funded by UNDP/GEF/SGP.

During the implementation of the three projects Gender action plans were designed and implemented these projects targeted women as key actors and major stakeholders in biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction.
