ASOCIACION CHELONIA

The Asociacion Chelonia is a non-profit international organization based in Madrid, Spain. Its main objectives are to promote more sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity, ecosystems and threatened species. These objectives include the implementation of international cooperation projects and activities which are compatible with and complementary to improving the living conditions of the local human populations that are in balance with their natural environment. Special attention is paid to more disadvantaged groups, womens' problems and gender inequity, as well as those related to children, adolescents and ethnic and social minorities. Chelonia has carried out conservation and sustainable development projects in Spain and numerous countries in Central and South America.

Purpose of Organization:

The organization's objectives are sustainable development and conservation, including activities which are compatible with and complementary to improving the living conditions of the local human populations that are in balance with their natural environment. Chelonia has carried out projects in Spain and Central and South America.

Experience:

Biodiversity: Reduction of sea turtle and shark catches in the Spanish Mediterranean through the use of TEDs and magnetic hooks; Increase in knowledge on the impact of longline fisheries on sea turtles in the South Atlantic and Mediterranean seas; Update of the conservation status of wild populations of the Orinoco crocodile and contribution to its conservation in Colombia; Strengthening the communal organization, the role of the women and community-based development through the ecotourism in Urabá (Colombia); Reinforcement of a regional protected area in Urabá (Colombia) through training and the implementation of sustainable production activities. Contribution to the conservation of continental turtles in Uruguay.

Climate Change: Increase of knowledge of and applications using Amphibians as bio-indicators of climate change in Europe.

Land Degradation: Analysis of the influence of forest exploitation in Uruguay; Contribution to the recovery of forestry surface area and to the sustainable use of forests in a regional protected area in Urabá Gulf (Antioquia, Colombia).

International Waters: Conservation of sea surtles in the French-Spanish Mediterranean Sea; Cooperation activities for the conservation of the Orinoco Crocodile in Colombia and Venezuela.

Persistent Organic Pollutants: Analysis of POPs in commercial species of sharks in Spain and France.
