Indigenous People Task Force completes Issues Paper

An Indigenous Peoples Task Force was established in July 2011 and prepared an issues paper on GEF and Indigenous peoples as an input to the process by GEF to develop a Policy Paper on Indigenous peoples. The issues paper was prepared in a participatory manner with consultation in different regions (see the next story) and circulation of drafts. It highlights key principles and policy areas including rights to land territories and resources; Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC); participation; traditional knowledge; and access and benefit sharing.  Proposed mechanisms to enhance IP engagement in GEF include establishment of an advisory committee and a funding mechanism, strengthening secretariat capacity on IP issues, setting up a recourse mechanism and inclusion of IP issues in GEF focal area strategies. The development of the issues paper is made possible with the generous support from the Swiss Government. Click copies of the issues paper in English, French and Spanish here.
