 GEF-NGO Network is an independent network of civil society organisations which acts as a bridge between civil society and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) - the largest global financing mechanism for the environment.


Happy New Year !  As we start a new 2013, we present here the last quarter of 2012 newsletter to keep you updated on the GEF Network activities, news from the Network regions and Indigenous Peoples Focal Points, news on GEF and upcoming events. Happy reading. 


 News from Central Focal Point     


COP 11 CBD, Hyderabab, India

The 11th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP11) was  held in Hyderabad, India from 8-19th October.  It was an important landmark event for biodiversity conservation.

GEF-CSO Consultation Meeting, 12 November 2012, Washington DC.

More than 100 representatives from civil society, GEF Council members GEF Agencies and the GEF Secretariat attended the consultation meeting on the 12 Nov 2012 in Washington DC, held prior to the 43nd GEF Council Meeting. The meeting included a one hour dialogue between civil society and the GEF CEO and three panel sessions to debate key issues related to Cso engagement in GEF, Financing needs for the environment and conventions implementation.  43rd GEF Council Meeting, 13-15 Nov 2012, Washington DC

The 43rd GEF Council Meeting was held in Washington DC from 13 – 15 Nov 2012. This meeting was important as a number of key decisions were made including streamlining of the project cycle that also raises the ceiling on medium-sized projects, subject to streamlined procedures, to US$2 million and  approving the Work Program for GEF, LDCF and SCCF. COP18 UNFCCC, Doha, Qatar

The GEF NGO Network represented by Mr. Faizal Parish, the Central Focal Point (CFP) was at the COP 18 UNFCCC from 30 Nov till 6 Dec 2012 in Doha, Qatar. A dialogue was organised between civil society organisations and the new GEF CEO on 4 Dec and attended by more than 100 CSOs. This provided an opportunity for a lively debate and for the CEO to explain her vision for enhancing stakeholders involvement in the work of GEF. 


Update on Network Membership

The Network welcomed 12 new members to the Network in November 2012. Click here for the list of the new members. As of today, the Network consists of 498 members. Click here for the membership breakdown according to regions and focal areas.

News from Network Regions

South Asia/South East Asia  - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Delhi, India.

The ECW for the South Asia and South East Asia took place in New Delhi, India from Nov 2012. The participants were from 13 countries, i.e. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.  Read more>>



North East AsiaNational Water Protection

On 14 December 2012, SGP China received the 2012 National Public Welfare Figure Prize of Water Protection for its efforts to support local NGOs to protect international waters especially reducing land-based pollution and restoring and protecting coastal habitats in China.

"Say NO! to fur" Campaign

Green Camel Bell, with GEF TaoHe River project and Action Asia jointly hosted on November 16, 2012 a number of sensitizing initiatives in Lanzhou West Lake under the motto: “Say NO! to fur – Protect biodiversity”. Read more>>




West Asia/North Africa - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Turkey.

The Expanded Constituency Workshop for North Africa and West Asia took place in Antalya, Turkey from 11-13 December 2012. Some one hundred plus delegates representing fourteen countries, including GEF agencies and CSO groups attended the workshop. They include representatives from Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Syria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Click here for the report.



Eastern Europe & Central Asia  - Endangered Herbs in Armenia

In February-December, 2012, Green Lane NGO implemented the project “Endangered Herbs in Armenia: Identification, Protection, and Sustainable Harvesting”, which was presented during the 2011 SunChild International Environmental Festival and was awarded the grant by FPWC and World Land Trust.Click here to read more

REC Caucasus Conference

On December 3-4, 2012, REC Caucasus organized a two-day conference on the project National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans updating in South Caucasus Countries at Sheraton Metechi Palace, Tbilisi, Georgia. Click here to read more.


News from Indigenous Peoples  

 Global Compact Releases Draft Guide on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Calls for Comments

10 December 2012, New York) – On International Human Rights Day, the UN Global Compact has released for comment the exposure draft of the Business Reference Guide on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Development of the Guide was initiated by a taskforce of Global Compact LEAD companies that wanted to increase their and other companies' understanding of the rights in the UNDRIP and what to do to respect and support them. Read more>>

GEF CEO Launches Forum on Innovation & Partnership





 DOHA, Qatar, Dec. 6, 2012 – Naoko Ishii, CEO of the Global Environment Facility, announced today that she will lead a Forum on Innovation and Partnership as part of her “GEF2020” strategy exercise aimed at positioning the GEF to address growing environmental threats on a global scale. New Report Unveils Innovative Approach To Saving Global Oceans   

Washington, D.C, 14 December 2012Concrete actions must begin now to mitigate or reverse grave threats to the world’s oceans, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) experts said today at the launch of a new report on how strengthened markets and policies can better protect oceans and coastal areas.  Read more about the report >>

SGP grantee receives the 2012 Transparent Action Award from One Foundation (China)

On December 1st, 2012, the Ningxia Center for Environment and Poverty Alleviation (the Center), a GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) grantee, became a recipient of the 2012 Transparent Action Award presented by China's One Foundation. Read more



Coastal Awards 2012

The Coastal Award 2012 was won by the Belitung Coastal Community Group (BCCG), Indonesia on October 22 for the community group category to honor their tremendous efforts in developing Kepayang Island as a conservation site through ecotourism. Read more.

About the GEF NGO Network

The GEF-NGO Network comprises nearly 500 member organizations with experience and expertise in GEFs areas of work from all regions around the world. It is governed by a global Coordination Committee composed of representatives of elected Regional Focal Point organisations from 16 geographic regions and three Indigenous Peoples Focal Points from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The day-to-day work of the Network is coordinated by a Central Focal Point (CFP) elected from among the Coordination Committee members.
